Madonna and Child with St John the Baptist

About this object

This exquisite panel of notable realism and beauty depicts Mary in a semi-portrait situated in front of a hillside. A small church façade is nestled in amongst a forest setting. Mary, clothed in a green/blue cloth jacket is facing the viewer, her head inclined slightly with pensive expression. The infant Jesus, placed in Mary's arms, sits covered with a transparent veil interacting with St. John the Baptist. St. John the Baptist is depicted handing the baby Jesus a small golden crosier. He holds in his left hand an inscription "Ecce Agnus Dei". Low clouds move across an upper blue sky.
